Prominent Ear Correction (Otoplasty)

People are often unhappy with the shape or size of their ears because they are prominent or even asymmetrical.  Surgery to make ears appear more normal can help restore self confidence and alleviate any teasing.  During Otoplasty the cartilage is reshaped allowing them to lie closer to the side of the head.  Otoplasty can be performed in children, teenagers or adults.  Young patients typically require general anaesthesia but older teenagers and adults can have the procedure performed under local anaesthetic, this eliminates hospital and anaesthetic charges, making the surgery more affordable.  Whether the surgery is performed under general or local anaesthetic, the procedure can be performed as a day procedure.  Following the surgery the patient has a head bandage which provides protection to the ears.  The head bandage is usually kept in place for a week before the first wound check.  After this point no further dressings are typically required.  Following the surgery, some discomfort is expected within the first twenty four to seventy two hours but this is usually easily managed with simple forms of pain relief such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen.  Children and adults usually take a week off from school or work, due to the presence of the bandage, the need to keep the head elevated or simply avoiding any strenuous activity.  It is important in the following four to six weeks that activities are limited that may potentially damage the ears through physical contact.

Otoplasty is a specialised and individualised elective cosmetic procedure.  It should only be performed by a Plastic Surgeon who is well versed in the variable techniques to get the best result from the individual patient.

A consultation with your surgeon will help you decide whether this surgery is ideal for you. At this consultation you will receive a medical assessment, discuss the surgical technique, expected outcome, recovery and potential complications. A price guide and Royal Australasian College of Surgeons information brochure can be requested prior to your consultation if desired. We do not show before & after photographs on the website as we prefer to discuss these photographs during a consultation.
