Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose.  People seek surgical treatment because they are unhappy with the shape or size of their nose.  The result of Rhinoplasty may be effective in helping to improve their appearance, self confidence and self esteem.  Using contemporary techniques in plastic surgery it is possible to increase or decrease the size of the nose, change the shape of the nasal tip, change the shape of the nasal bridge, decrease or increase the span of the nostrils, remove a hump, improve asymmetry.  Rhinoplasty may be performed to correct a birth deformity, damage to the nose following  injury or improve the breathing passages.  Rhinoplasty cannot be performed before a teenagers growth has stopped, in girls this is usually at sixteen years and with boys eighteen years.  These ages may vary particularly if trauma to the nose has occurred.

Decision to have a Rhinoplasty should only be made after discussion with your Plastic Surgeon.  The decision to have surgery is yours as an individual and should be made after careful consultation.  Patient’s who are healthy and have realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve, are suitable for Rhinoplasty.  It is important to remember why your nasal shape is important to you, particularly if there is a familial or ethnic trait.

Surgery is typically performed under general anaesthetic in a hospital facility as a day patient or overnight stay in hospital.  There is discomfort  post surgery which starts to subside after two to three days and is usually well managed at home with simple pain relief medication such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen.  Typically people take a week to two off work to allow the majority of discomfort and swelling to settle.  Bruising is possible and it varies depending on the type of technique used.  There are a number of contemporary surgical techniques used to individualise the requirements of each patient.  It is important that your surgery is performed by a Plastic Surgeon who is well versed in these techniques to gain the optimal result for you.

A consultation with your surgeon will help you decide whether this surgery is ideal for you. At this consultation you will receive a medical assessment, discuss the surgical technique, expected outcome, recovery and potential complications. A price guide and Royal Australasian College of Surgeons information brochure can be requested prior to your consultation if desired. We do not show before & after photographs on the website as we prefer to discuss these photographs during a consultation.
