breast enlargement (augmentation)

Breast enlargement (augmentation) using implants is a surgical technique to increase breast volume. Women may feel that their breast size and shape is unsatisfactory due to a lack of natural development or due to a decrease in breast size after pregnancy or weight loss. Such surgery is suitable for healthy women who have realistic expectations. Optimal size is a decision made between yourself and your Plastic Surgeon, after your desires have been listened to and your individual physical characteristics have been analysed.

Currently used implants are the result of research, development and clinical trials. They consist of a silicone shell containing either silicone gel or saline. Once inserted, they have a consistency to touch similar to normal breast tissue. They do not interfere with breastfeeding and mammography is possible after breast enlargement surgery.

The surgical technique of breast augmentation is tailored to your individual needs. The incision is typically placed in the fold under the breast where the long term scar is barely noticeable. Other augmentation incisions and approaches are possible and can be discussed. The implant can either be placed directly under the breast gland or behind the pectoralis chest muscle.

Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia (where the patient is fully asleep). The anaesthetic is given by a specialist Anaesthetist. Generally one night stay is required after breast augmentation surgery to ensure you recover well from the surgery and anaesthetic. You will be assessed by your surgeon prior to discharge and provided with adequate medication to manage any discomfort.

Time to return to work and driving is an individual response, but generally within 7-10 days this is possible. Exercise should be restricted for 3 weeks but you will be guided during your post-operative visits. Post-operative swelling settles relatively quickly but final shape and size is not usually achieved until 6 weeks after surgery.

A consultation with your surgeon will help you decide whether breast enlargement is ideal for you. At this consultation you will receive a medical assessment, discuss the surgical technique, expected outcome, recovery and potential complications. A price guide and Royal Australasian College of Surgeons information brochure can be requested prior to your consultation if desired. We do not show before & after photographs on the website as we prefer to discuss these photographs during a consultation.
