abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)

An abdominoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed. Pregnancy and fluctuating weight can cause development of loose skin, fat deposits, stretch marks and poor abdominal shape. Significant weight loss can also result in substantial loose skin. These characteristics typically persist despite proper diet and exercise. Abdominoplasty surgery specifically targets these characteristics to gain the desired cosmetic outcome. This cosmetic procedure removes loose skin, fat deposits, and stretch marks from the abdomen. Also addressed during surgery are the stretched abdominal muscles, which are tightened resulting in a firmer and flatter abdomen. Often liposuction is added to further improve body contours.

Individuals considering a tummy tuck should be healthy and relatively fit. This surgery is performed using general anaesthesia with an overnight stay in hospital. Post-operatively pain, bruising, and swelling are likely to be experienced, most of which will subside in a few weeks. All, or most, of the stitches are dissolving and do not need to be removed. Most patients are able to return to work in 1-3 weeks, but it maybe 4-6 weeks before you are able to return to full activity, including heavy lifting and exercise. Cosmetic results from an abdominoplasty are well maintained with time, however this can be compromised by future pregnancy or weight fluctuation.
